What is Scrip fundraising?
Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase Scrip, you’re purchasing gift cards that are used just like cash. You can use Scrip at many major retailers for everyday purchases such as food, clothing, and gas. Because there are so many retailers who participate in the Scrip program, you can use Scrip for home improvement projects, travel, and even prescription co-pays. Remember, Scrip gift cards are the exact same gift cards you would buy at the checkout stand in your local grocery store or at the retailer itself.
How Scrip generates revenue for Progressive Spiritualist Church
The Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on behalf of non-profit organizations to purchase large quantities of gift cards from retailers. Because the cards are purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount off the face value of the gift card. PSC purchases the cards from Great Lakes Scrip and then re-sells them to members and their families for full face value. The discount – from two to fifteen percent or more – is our church’s revenue.
Fundraising without selling
Scrip is a popular fundraiser because there is no selling. Organization members produce revenue by making regular household purchases they would make anyway. The members are raising money for the church without spending any additional money of their own.
